Mae Celebrates 102 Years
Bee Hive Homes in Eagar, AZ. helped our resident, Mae, celebrate her 102 years “young” Birthday on the 4th of January 2012.
Ruthie Mae Edmund Scott born January 4th, 1910. Born and raised in Arkansas. Mae had 2 sisters and 3 brothers. Mae’s father owned and operated a saw mill in Dierks, Arkansas. Mae grew up in Pie County, Arkansas. Lived in small saw mill community of loggers in Arkansas. Mae remembers as a child growing up that they did not have indoor plumbing or electricity. Used kerosene to have light, had an “out house” that they used when they had to go to the bathroom, nothing like now a days where you just go in sit, flush and get up. They carried all their water for dishes, drinking and bathing. Attended school, did not graduate. She met her husband at an Easter egg hunt and states she knew he was the one for her. They dated about a year and married at the age of 15 in 1925. Mae states her dad just cried and cried when her mom told him that Mae wanted to get married. Mae and Alfred had 9 children all together. Seven sons and two daughters. Two of Mae’s sons live here in the Round Valley Area, Gerald and Millard. Mae and Alfred moved to the Alpine area in 1953 where her husband went to work at the Whiting saw mill. Mae worked in the Alpine area at the Sportsman Restaurant for many years. Mae states she made many a pie at the restaurant. States the most money she made back then was $3.00 an hour. Mae states her favorite song is “How Great Thou Art”. She says she always loved to sing in church and wherever but her dad always told her she could not carry a tune in a tow sack, but she continued to sing anyway. When Mae’s husband became ill she said she quit her job to stay home and take care of him. After 56 years of marriage her loving husband passed away in 1981. Mae never remarried. Mae also states she never drove nor had a drivers license her whole life. Her favorite food is “good
ole fried chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy and turnip greens. Mae celebrated her 102 years “young” at the Bee Hive in Eagar, AZ. Family and friends came and celebrated with Mae on this very special day. Of course Mae had her favorite meal prepared and served by the staff at the Bee Hive. Mayor of Eagar came by with bouquet of flowers and certificate and presented to Mae on behalf of the town of Eagar. Karen from the local paper came, interviewed Mae, photo taken and article will appear in the Independent newspaper. When questioned Mae on her accomplishments and what advice she would have for us “young-ins” she replied with her little crooked smile, be kind to each other and live life as if it is your last day. Her accomplishments she feels is her family and having lived a good life. Mae is such an inspiration to all that have known her and all love her dearly. She is kind, compassionate and very caring person.
